Platt Lane Methodist Church has been operating in the MossSide, Rusholme and Fallowfield areas of Manchester. Our organisation works closely with social services and as a Voluntary Organisation assisting the elderly frail, mentally ill, people with learning difficulties and many other groups. The church itself is 70 years old and is set in a 1930s housing estate. Some 30 years ago as a development of its concern for the community the premises were offered to Social Services as a base for the Senior Citizens Luncheon Club. Later a Community Worker was appointed and from that, some 25 years ago a Community and Day Care centre was set up, financed by the Local Authority and managed by the Church Council. The Centre supplemented the work of the Lunch Club by providing Day Care for the elderly andor frail people referred by Social Services, running a drop in Coffee Bar and a Senior Citizens Social Club, which consists of Sequence Dancing, Line Dancing, Whist Drives, Holidays, Outings, Shopping trips, Bingo sessions, Art and Crafts and many other activities. We also provide support and when necessary counselling for the users and thier families or carers. Taking people to the doctors or hospital appointments. The centre also gives space to Link Community Care Group who provides help and support outside of the centre. We have a surgery for a Welfare Rights Officer, a Tenants Association Office and twice a week have a Self Help and an Art Group for adults with severe physical disabilities or learning difficulites. During the evenings many youth movements such as Girl Guides, Brownies and Boys Brigade occupy the Community Centre. It is also used for the Trafford Light Orchestra to rehearse.
